There is a quiet satisfaction in building something capable out of parts that other people discarded. A Malairte mining rig is an ideal candidate for this approach, because the workload does not demand cutting-edge hardware and the used market is awash with exactly the right components. Here is how the pieces come together, and where used makes sense versus where it does not.
The GPU: buy used, inspect hard
The graphics card is the heart of the build and the place where used delivers the most value. The post-Ethereum flood means mid-range cards trade well below retail. The catch is condition, so inspect fans, ask for memory junction screenshots, and budget for a repaste and repad. A carefully chosen used mid-range card is the cornerstone of a sensible build.
The CPU: used is usually fine
Processors are remarkably durable and rarely wear out in the way fans or thermal compound do. A used chip from a previous generation that still has a healthy core count and a decent cache is a strong value. There are no moving parts to fail, so a used CPU at a fraction of its launch price is a comfortable buy.
The motherboard: be a little more careful
Motherboards can hide damage in their VRMs and capacitors after a hard life. Buy used here, but from a seller who can show it posting, and stick to known chipsets with solid power delivery. Inspect the board visually for bulging capacitors or scorch marks around the VRMs.
RAM: buy used without worry
Memory is one of the safest used purchases. It either works or it does not, and a quick memory test reveals problems immediately. A used dual-channel kit at rated speed is all most builds need.
The PSU: buy this one new
The power supply is the one component where used is a false economy. PSUs degrade with age and heat, and a failing unit can take your other components with it. Buy a quality new Gold-rated PSU with a real warranty. It protects everything else in the build.
Storage: new or lightly used
For an SSD, check the drive's wear level before buying used; a drive with most of its endurance spent is not worth it. New SSDs are cheap enough that buying new for the system and node drive is often the easier call.
The result
Put together thoughtfully, a mostly-used build can match a far more expensive new one for mining purposes, at a fraction of the cost. The discipline is knowing which corners are safe to cut and which are not. Save on the GPU, CPU, and RAM. Do not save on the PSU.
